Does llms.txt help a WordPress site appear in AI answers?
Short answer: for Google Search, no. Google says it does not use llms.txt, and that the file will not affect your visibility or rankings positively or negatively. Other services may treat it differently, and nothing in the sources below says otherwise.
What Google says
Google's guide to generative AI features lists "LLMS.txt files and other special markup" among things you do not need. It says you do not have to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search, including its generative AI capabilities, because Google Search itself does not use them. Its June 15, 2026 changelog entry adds that it is fine to keep such files for other services or systems that use them.
What this does not tell you
These documents are about Google Search. They do not describe how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or other products treat llms.txt. For those, check each vendor's own documentation. At the time of writing, the OpenAI and Perplexity crawler pages we read explain access through robots.txt rules and published IP ranges. Neither page says llms.txt controls crawler access.
Is it harmful to add one?
Google says it is fine to maintain one for other services. If a WordPress plugin generates it for you and you want it, there is no stated downside. Just do not expect it to change what Google shows.
What to do first instead
- Make sure crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and are not blocked by your CDN or security plugin.
- Put the answer to the question in the first sentences of the page.
- Make important content available as text, not only in images or scripts.
- Cite where your numbers come from.
Google's own advice is to prioritize effective SEO strategies over "AEO/GEO hacks", and to ignore tactics like unnecessary AI text files.
