How to get your WordPress site cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

Published October 13, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: make sure your pages are crawlable and indexed, answer one clear question per section in the first sentence or two, back claims with numbers and named sources, and get mentioned on other sites. Nobody can guarantee a citation, and anyone who does is guessing.

1. Be crawlable first

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says to make sure you are not blocking its OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt. Check your robots.txt, your security plugin and your CDN settings before anything else.

2. Answer first, then explain

Put the direct answer in the first one or two sentences under a heading that is phrased like the question people ask. Then add detail. This is easy for an engine to lift as a passage, and it is also better for readers.

3. Add facts an engine can quote

The GEO research paper from Princeton and others (KDD 2024) tested content changes such as adding quotations, statistics and citations to sources, and reported that some of them raised how visible a page was in generative engine answers in their benchmark. Treat that as a reason to test, not a promise: it was a controlled benchmark, not your site.

4. Build mentions outside your site

Several third-party studies of AI answers find that community and review sites such as Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn are cited a lot, though the numbers differ by study and change over time. Useful, honest posts and answers in places your buyers already read can help you get found. Do not spam.

5. Keep pages fresh and specific

Update posts when facts change, show the date, and write for a narrow reader (for example "WordPress agency owners") instead of everyone.

6. Measure what you can

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted in the normal Search Console Performance report (Web search type). For other engines, test your target questions by hand every few weeks and note whether you are cited.
