Does llms.txt help a WordPress site appear in AI answers?
Short answer: probably not today. No major AI company has committed to reading llms.txt, and Google has said publicly it does not use it. It costs almost nothing to add, so we ship it as an option in AIRankWP, but we would never sell it to you as a ranking trick. It is not one.
If you hang around SEO circles you have seen llms.txt pitched as "robots.txt for AI". The idea sounds tidy: a Markdown file at your root that tells language models what your site is and which pages matter. Tidy ideas spread fast. So we went and read what the engines actually say before building anything.
What llms.txt actually is
llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard. It suggests you publish a Markdown file listing your most important pages with short descriptions, so a model that fetches it gets a curated map instead of raw HTML. That is the whole idea. Nothing in it forces any company to fetch the file, and fetching it does not mean using it.
What the engines say, in their own words
Google's documentation on AI features is the place everyone watches, and it describes controls built on normal search infrastructure: robots.txt, nosnippet, preview controls. llms.txt does not appear in it. Google's people have said in public comments that they do not use llms.txt and compare it to the old keywords meta tag. The AI optimization guide is the current reference; the updates blog is where a change of heart would show up first.
OpenAI's crawler documentation lists its bots and what they read. No llms.txt. Perplexity's bot guide is the same story. As of October 2026, we could not find a single major engine promising to honor the file.
So why does the plugin still include it?
Two honest reasons. First, it is off by default and free to turn on. Second, conventions sometimes get adopted late. If one of the big engines starts reading llms.txt next year, having a clean one already published costs you nothing. Think of it like a cheap option, not a strategy.
What we will not do is tell you it moves the needle today. Anyone selling llms.txt as an AI ranking signal is ahead of the evidence.
What to spend that time on instead
The same hour buys you things with actual evidence behind them:
- Rewrite your ten best posts to answer their question in the first paragraph.
- Make sure the answer crawlers can reach you at all (robots.txt, firewall rules).
- Add real FAQ sections with direct answers to the questions people ask you.
- Get mentioned on sites the engines already quote.
Boring? Yes. Also the stuff that shows up in every study and every vendor doc we have read.
FAQ
Can llms.txt hurt my site? No. It is a static text file. The worst case is that nobody reads it.
Should I block AI crawlers until llms.txt exists everywhere? Blocking and llms.txt are unrelated decisions. Block training bots if you do not want your text in models; leave answer bots alone if you want the traffic.
Where do I check if this changed? Watch each vendor's crawler documentation, not social posts. We update the plugin and this blog when the docs move.
