How to get your WordPress site cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews
Short answer: write pages that answer one question directly, in the first paragraph, with facts and sources an engine can check. Then make sure the crawlers can actually reach you. There is no trick beyond that, and anyone selling one is selling hope.
This is the checklist we use ourselves, built from what the engines publish and what studies of AI citations keep finding. It is free, it is boring, and it works better than any hack we have tested.
1. Answer the question before you explain it
Answer engines quote text they can lift cleanly. A paragraph that starts with three sentences of throat-clearing gives them nothing to lift. Look at your ten most important posts and ask: could someone copy the first paragraph into an answer and have it make sense alone? If not, rewrite the opening until it could.
2. Write headings the way people ask
"How much does it cost?" beats "Pricing considerations". Engines match questions to headings, and question-shaped headings are the closest match you can give them. Three or more per post is a good floor.
3. Put real numbers and real sources in
A peer-reviewed study on generative engine optimization found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in generative engine responses far more than keyword tuning did. Engines prefer text that carries its own evidence. "A 2024 study of 500 sites" beats "studies show". Link the source while you are at it.
4. Keep the crawl door open
None of the writing matters if OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot get a 403. Check robots.txt, your security plugin and your CDN. Our robots.txt guide walks through it, and Google's AI features documentation explains how AI Overviews inherit normal Search controls.
5. Give every post a small FAQ
Three to five questions with direct answers at the end of a post. It mirrors how people prompt, it adds quote-ready text, and it catches the follow-up questions your main answer missed. Even after Google dropped FAQ rich results, the visible section still earns its place.
6. Get mentioned somewhere else
Engines lean on sources they already trust. An analysis covered by Search Engine Land found Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn among the most-cited domains across AI search engines. A genuine presence where your buyers actually talk, plus mentions on sites in your niche, does more than a hundredth meta tweak on your own domain.
7. Be easy to identify
About page, real author names, contact details, consistent naming. Engines assembling an answer prefer sources they can attribute. Anonymous content on a site with no identity loses to the same content on a site that looks accountable. OpenAI's publisher FAQ is worth ten minutes of your time.
What we would not bother with
llms.txt as a ranking tactic (no engine has committed to reading it), "AI-optimized" keyword stuffing, and mass-produced answer pages. The engines are actively trying to filter the third one. Write like a person who knows the topic, cite like you expect to be checked, and keep the door open. That is the whole game.
FAQ
How long until citations show up? Weeks to months, and some pages never get cited. Treat this like compound interest, not a switch.
Do I need to rank on Google first? It helps, because some answer engines lean on search indexes, but Perplexity and ChatGPT also cite pages outside the classic top ten when the answer fits the question better.
Can a plugin do this for me? A plugin can find the problems and draft fixes; the judgment stays with you. That is exactly how we built AIRankWP: scans, reviewed fixes, nothing auto-published.
